My training starts

Posted by weyshi on July 17, 2008

Suppose to post about my run on the previous post.. but forgot…

Today, I met dearie at Queenstown stadium for a run.. it has been sometime since i last exercise, because no time to run, no kakis to play soccer.. it’s so sad to know that nobody plays soccer after parade anymore… I hope that someone will continue the tradition man…

Back to queenstown.. I had a bet with dearie that if I can do a pull up, she will treat me guo tie!! YES.. I DID ONE!!! I’m not suppose to be very proud of that but I’m happy that I get a treat!! After that, we prepare ourselves to start running.. i felt so lethargic and ended up doing a 15mins warm up.. eventually, I ran la…

After I complete 1 round of track (400m), I can feel that weight of my body + legs… my thighs, ankle and back start hurting.. Therefore, I took my time to ran so that I wun strain and injure myself.. manage to tahan 6 rounds.. I guess I took 25mins to finish up the 2.4km..

It’s slow. but a good start.. at least i have started on working out to shed the fats… alright.. I sleeping soon.. really hope that I wun have the bad ache throughout my body tmr…

Life after P&D…

Posted by weyshi on July 17, 2008

It has been awhile since the competition ended and me playing my bagpipes.. I somehow feel uneasy to be so free these days, without having to rush to Barker for practice. Now, I have time to meet Dearie, have time to exercise, take my time for dinner, and most importantly sleep well… however, I somehow feel abit lost on what I should do.

It has been quite difficult still to accept that we have lost the competition.. especially for open category… The music, the arrangement, the difficulty.. is thousand times better than the rest, and we excuted it decently… I have been telling myself that the only reason we can lose is that they never heard those tunes before.. However, I am still not going to stoop so low to play easy easy tunes… I believe in challenges… guess that’s the pride of an ACSian.. we only do what others can’t do…

I am into my 7th week of IO.. 2++ weeks and I am starting my school… That doesn’t sounds good to me, because I still have to complete my IO logbook and report, which I have yet to start. In addition, I still have to work on my project, which seems to slow down everytime my supervisor leaves Singapore. I guess I have to buck up… start finishing up what is undone, and not left till last last minute (it’s quite last min now)… BTW.. doing things last minutes is also a special characteristic of ACSian.. the best part of it.. we will always rise to the occasion and get the job done beautifully… if not, we will find some excuse and comfort ourselves and continue to think we are the best.. hahaha..

So these are the stuff I need to work on..

  1. IO logbook – week 1 – 6
  2. IO report – contents, intro.. everything except cover page…
  3. FYP literature review – which means have to read a lot of books and mug in the library…
  4. Find the chemical structure from FTIR data – I really suck at chemistry…
  5. 1 more formulation and testings… + compiling reports..

On top of that, i still have countless BB and Band stuff to settle… I guess I have to stop procrastinating and convince myself that work is good…. and.. go to work ON TIME!!

Back to the basics

Posted by weyshi on July 8, 2008

It was a disappointing weekend. We went to the battlefield with confidence, but end up losing all the categories. However, we still held our heads high.. it’s all about judging like the PM of Simon Fraser University Pipe Band said in 1998 when they are awarded 6th position for the 1998 Worlds Pipe Band Championship that year. Right now, we have to pick ourselves up from this year’s competition.. and start to focus on our main weakness which is not playing the basics that they expect… I guess we have also played tunes that are unfamiliar to them, making them too exhausted from listen.. whatever the case is, I still have to say that we played the medley really well..

I am quite tempted to play those traditional and easy tunes next year, just to be “competition smart”.. but certainly I will feel no pride in winning… I guess we will be sticking on the creativity side so expect more interesting and entertaining tunes from us!! Oh ya.. I did not chicken out the 16 parted MSR, but did make a few mistakes like forgetting the last part of the March and Strathspey. As for the reel, I jumped from part 3 to part 6. I guess the judge didn’t know anything about the parts of the tunes as it was not mentioned in the judging comments.

The adjudicators came to Barker on Sunday to conduct workshop. I attached myself to the drum section to learn more about tenor drumming and tuning. Personally, I felt really enriched, especially the tuning section. It’s a leap forward to be a self-sufficient band.

Right now, I will have to concentrate on my work and reports. I am at my 6th week at work and 4 more weeks to complete my project, reports and log book. Since the begininning of attachment, I have yet to show my logbook for my supervisor to see. I hope to clear it soon.. else I will be stressed up again with lots of work.

Preperation for Battle

Posted by weyshi on July 3, 2008

2 days left for the Pipes & Drums Festival, and it is going to be an exciting one because the large number of participants. It’s a pity that some bands don’t take this competition because it’s probably the competition with the highest standards around the region. The event is organized annually by The Boys’ Brigade in Singapore to raise the standards of bagpipe in Singapore. I am not sure about others, but I am certain that it has raised my personal standards.

This year, I am not well prepared for both the band and solo competition, but I am still going there to give my best shot. For my solo MSR, I will be taking on the challenge of playing 16 parts (I hope I don’t chicken out last minute). Till this day, I have yet to memorise all the 16 parts and all I can hope for is God’s grace, strength and wisdom for me to pull through, impressing the pipe adjudicator. Today, my fingers seems to cramp up when I am practicing, probably due to the last minute revision since last Saturday. I hope the tension will go off soon and serve me well during the competition.

Alright, if anyone of you interested to come watch, you can visit the *scape Youth park (some skate park near Somerset MRT) and take a peek. The solo segment is in the morning and band segment is in the afternoon. Just in case you are not sure, it’s on 5th July 08.

Okay, need to recharge myself on the bed… Good night…
